The Rose to Take Away

The Rose offers a delicious selection of our own home-made jams, preserves and cakes to take away. Many of these are regular features on our menu, though some are specifically designed for special occasions. Please note that cakes have to be preordered one day in advance.

Jams and Preserves                                                Cakes

Organic 3-fruit Marmalade.                                                            Jar of 450g: £5.50

Experiencing its fresh and distinctive taste, you realise this marmalade is worth a two-day cooking process! Firstly the lemon, orange and grapefruit peel is allowed to soften naturally overnight, steeped in water. Next morning the fruit is cooked briefly before being left for a further 24 hours, this time steeped in dissolved sugar. It is then cooked very rapidly on the final day until it reaches setting point. An explosion of taste! A classic British preserve to enjoy with breakfast or afternoon tea. You may choose it with our breakfast at The Rose.

Tomato & Chilli Jam.                                                                       Jar of 410g: £6.00

The idea for this jam originates from the ‘Sugar Club’ cook book by Peter Gordon. Tamasin Day-Lewis writes, “No kitchen should be without this Jam” in her book, ‘Good Tempered Food’. “I personally could not imagine life without it! I love it for breakfast on toast with a fried egg on top. It is delicious served on bruschetta with goat’s cheese and it is super served with fish.” We serve it with our fishcakes.

Crunchy Cucumber Pickle.                                                            Jar of 390g: £5.00

This is my version of the traditional English ‘Bread & Butter pickle’. You will find it goes extremely well with bread and butter. Add a chunk of mature Montgomery Cheddar and you will enjoy it even more. We serve it with our organic burger, giving extra crunch & spice to your meal!

Mild Green Tomato Chutney.                                                        Jar of 400g: £5.50

Although green tomatoes have become quite trendy to eat, this chutney is made from a traditional Danish recipe. Cooking tomatoes before they ripen provides an extra tartness that gives this chutney its wonderful, full flavour. It’s a shame that green tomatoes are sold at double the price of ripe red tomatoes … but once again flavour wins the day! You will love this versatile chutney with cheese, cold cuts and curry.

Mango Chutney.                                                                              Jar of 400g: £6.00

I have to admit, this is my favourite chutney. It’s sounds so simple and yet it’s so fresh tasting and has a beautifully translucent colour!. When there’s space on the menu, we serve it here with our Sandwich au Bedat – crisp bacon, organic smoked salmon and mango chutney on lightly toasted organic bread …and of course it’s perfect with any curry.

Sweet & Sour Tomato-Orange Pickle with Tarragon                 Jar of 400g: £5.50

A sweetish, clean tasting pickle, made with half green, half red tomatoes, oranges and fresh tarragon. Very moreish! It is delicious with cold pork, gammon and ham, and also with cold salt beef.

Cider Jelly with Vanilla                                                                   Jar of 400g: £5.00

Sweet, spicy and a little tangy. Perfect on scones and cold ham dishes.

Pears with Pinot Noir and Cinnamon                                           Jar of 400g: £6.00

Use as a teatime treat, or serve as dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Quince Products.

Each year I am excited at the arrival of the first quinces in late October. I guess this has something to do with the way that slow cooking almost magically transforms this hard, stony fruit into a deep amber sweetmeat with incredible flavour and aroma. This sweetmeat, though extremely labour intensive to make, forms the basis of a range of jams, jellies and pickles with fabulously intensive flavours. Generally speaking, they are all great with bread, and can be used as a versatile ingredient in everything from game dishes to desserts.

Quince Jelly *                                                                                  Jar of 400g: £6.00

A clear jelly of quince that preserves the characteristic taste of the fruit.

Quince Butter *                                                                              Jar of 400g: £6.00

Coming somewhere in between a jelly and a fruit paste, the quince butter is soft enough to spread, whilst looking thick and firm lime a fruit paste. Good on toast, scones, in Moroccan lamb dishes, or simply with a good Wensleydale.

Quince Butter with Orange *                                                        Jar of 400g: £6.00

This quince butter is flavoured with orange, and is great with cold pork dishes.

Quince with Gingerbread Spice. *                                                 Jar of 400g: £6.00

Pieces of quince in its jelly. Mainly used on toast and as an accompaniment for desserts.

Quince with Orange and Cardamom *                                        Jar of 400g: £6.00

Great with toast, or served with cream as a dessert.

Pickled Quince with Coriander *                                                  Jar of 400g: £6.00

The delicate flavour of the coriander seeds makes this pickled quince a wonderful accompaniment to cold ham and pork dishes.
